Act 2 Prologue
03:18
|
|||
Prologue:
Cm Bb Ab G
Narrator: 1430 Joan is Captured by the Burgundians who are loyal to the English oppressors.
The English pay a large ransom to the Burgundians in exchange for Joan.
It seems the English care more about Joan than the French. Her King Charles does not try to save her
Joan is transferred to the great English castle at Rouen to be tried for heresy:
Assistant Narrator: Bishop Cauchon claims jurisdiction over Joan’s trial since Joan was captured in Compiègne, which is in his diocese of Beauvais.
Narrator: Will Joan make it out alive?
Assistant: She is put on trial in front of highly educated Church leaders who are loyal to the English crown. If any French supporters were to show their face in this court room, they would likely be hanged for treason.
Joan is a lamb among wolves who are plotting her destruction. A young peasant girl will battle against rot, corruption, and darkness in the Church she loves
Narrator: Joan is going through the darkest
time of her life. Only one thing can save her. A miracle.
Cm Bb Ab G Cm Bb Ab G
A Miracle. A prophesy. A Maiden of Lorraine will save France
Cm Bb Ab G Cm Bb Ab G
Joan: I am not afraid. God is with me… I was born for this.
Cm Bb Ab G
I was born for this

Cm Eb Ab G
Bishop: Our most serene and Christian King Henry VI king of England and France has placed this girl in our hands accused of a number of heretical deeds to be tried in a matter of faith.
Take the Holy gospels in your hands and swear to tell the whole truth.
Joan: No… Because I do not know what you will ask. You may ask me things about which I do not want to answer
Bishop: You will swear to tell the truth about all that we ask you.
Joan: I will swear to tell the truth about all earthly things. But as to my revelations, I have told no one but my king. Charles VII the one and only king of France.
Chorus: aaaaah
Bishop: (yells) Silence. Order in the court. You must take an oath. Even a king would take an oath.
Joan: I will tell you all I am allowed to tell you. But as for the rest, even if you threaten to kill me, I will not tell you.
Peter: I can't watch anymore. Joan. Please. Don’t you know they will kill you if they can. What should I do? I feel so helpless. She is so bold. And seems so reckless.
___
Bishop: Begin by telling us your name
Joan: My name is Joan.
Bishop: Where were you born
Joan: in a village called Do-re-mi - (Domrémy)
Bishop: How old are you?
Joan: 19 or thereabouts
Bishop: Were you baptized?
Joan: Yes.
Bishop: Recite Our Lord’s Prayer
Joan: Not unless you hear my confession
Chorus: aaah
Bishop: Listen Joan. We are all men of faith and we shall strive for the salvation of your body and your soul. We do this in the name of our Holy Mother Church who always opens her arms to those who return to her. But we cannot help you unless you submit to our learned judgment
CHORUS: Judgement. Judgement. Judgment.
Joan: You claim to be my judges. You be careful. For you too one day will be judged.
Ensemble: yells from the audience and everyone.
Bishop (angry): Joan!! Do you not know. That I have the power to convict you. And you will be killed. Is that what you want?
Joan: Continue with this trial. You have already decided what the verdict will be. Do what you want with me.
Bishop: We will proceed with this trial. We will not let you defile the ways of the Lord. Did God command you to put on men’s clothes?
Joan: My clothes are a small matter. The least. But it was done according to Our Father’s will (Bishop scoffs)
Bishop: Will you wear a woman’s dress if we give you one?
Joan: Send me home to my family and I will wear whatever you like
BIshops: Then tell us about your visions
Joan: What do you want to know?
Bishop: Did God tell you Charles would be king?
Joan: I told you already when you first questioned me
Bishop: When did the voices start?
Joan: You know, when I was 13
Bishop: Who spoke to you?
Joan: St. Michael, St. Margaret, St. Catherine
Bishop: How did you know?
Joan: They told me. They told me. They told me that in 7 years disaster would fall upon the English
Bishop: That is enough. We will conclude for the day and resume tomorrow.
Now please. Send her away. – sing intensely

Narrator: The trial drags on for days and the Bishop pressures Joan to sign a confession letter that her visions were not real. Although Joan initially agrees, she later retracts her confession and she is put back on trial
Bishop: We must complete this trial
We must let justice rule
I am getting tired of being Joan’s fool
Joan, I don’t understand. Why you dressed like a man?
And why did you recant your story?
Joan: Bishop, you already know. I must speak God’s truth and do His will even if it kills me
BIshop:Joan you leave me no choice
Joan: You always have a choice.
Bishop: You will die through your own words
Joan: No I die through you (looks directly at Bishop. He looks away).
Bishop: (not looking at Joan) Joan we find you guilty. You will be handed over to the secular authorities and will be burned at the stake.
Joan: I accept my fate

Abmaj7
The days were grand and quite extraordinary
Cm
I remember the first time I am heard the chorus singing
Ab
The church was full with music loudly ringing
,
Verse 1:
In the halls of seminary,
Priests learn what it means to be
A servant of God and His holy ways
And how to lead their flock in faith
Chorus:
We study scripture day and night
Learn to pray with all our might
To counsel those who seek our aid
And spread God's love, unafraid.
Ebmaj7.
Oh the things I learned in seminary

I learned theology and Church history
I learned the mystery of the trinity
How to administer the sacraments
And to guide the faithful in their quests

Pride comes before the fall. Pride can conquer the strongest of all.
Who will win and who will die. Who will make a sacrifice
Em D
May 30, Joan is burned at the stake. The English made a big mistake
AM B
Narrator: They didn’t know her life would live on. In you and me and far beyond
Joan’s mother made sure that Joan’s name was pure. A name revered by the rich and poor
Soon the trial was overturned. But much too late, she was already burned
1920 the Church declares, that Joan is a saint, her fame spreads everywhere
She taught us not to be afraid, but to trust in God he has already paid (the price)
Peter went on to become a priest. With the Church as his bride he had a feast.
Joan inspired him to be. The man God made him to be
(Peter walks down in a cassock and walks up to altar)
Peter: Lord, you answered me. I know who you want me to be
I know what you called me for
I born for this
(Narrators put on priestly garbs for Peter)
Listen to the quiet voice. To the fire inside you always have a choice
Who will win and who will die. Love requires a sacrifice — change lyrics???
He Was Born for This) —- raise eucharist
You were born for this —- Angels and saints and all
